Wingers drop another OT game

By R-E Sports Staff, The Republican Eagle 12/23/2011, 6:19pm CST

Overtime continued to frustrate the Red Wing girls hockey team Thursday as it dropped another overtime contest 3-2 to Minneapolis in Red Wing.

The eighth-ranked Wingers dropped their second overtime game of the season and snapped a six-game winning streak. Two of the team’s three losses have come in overtime this season.

Minneapolis’ Hannah Hilden-Reid proved the difference maker as Red Wing (9-3, 3-0 Missota) peppered her with 43 shots. Hilden-Reid stopped 41 of them and kept the Novas in the game.

“I feel like that’s the best goalie we’ve faced all year,” Wingers head coach Scott Haley said. “We had a lot of real good chances. She just made a lot of solid saves that you don’t typically see.”

Minneapolis’ Katy Fuller scored the game-winner shortly after Red Wing had killed its fifth penalty of the game.

Red Wing fell behind in the first period when Fuller scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 13 minutes, 46 seconds. Penalties became a recurring theme the rest of the game for the Wingers as they only went on the power play once.

Nicole Schammel tied the game 2:14 into the second period with her 21st goal of the season. Schammel is on pace to score 42 goals this season. She scored 46 last season to set a single-season school record.

Minneapolis responded less than a minute later with a goal from Sadie Baker to take a 2-1 lead.

Reagan Haley got the game tied again late in the third period with 3:26 left to play on a feed from Schammel, but Red Wing failed to get anything else past Hilden-Reid.

Lisa Nibbe made 24 saves in the loss for the Wingers, who will play Rogers Dec. 27 at the Cooper-Armstrong Tournament.
