Breck wins in the Semi-final game vs. South St. Paul

 The Mustangs Kate Schipper scored Breck’s first 4 goals this morning to lead the Mustangs to a 5-1 win over the South St. Paul Packers. The Mustangs advance to the Championship Game at Noon on Saturday versus the Warroad Warriors.

 Coach Vannelli had a surprise for the Packers and the Breck Faithful when sophomore Milica McMillen hit the ice playing center on the second shift between Kate Schipper and Emily Kleidon. The line change put McMillen’s stickhandling and passing skills between two of Breck’s fastest skaters and that combination was lethal for the Packers.

 
Breck could of scored in the opening 90 seconds, as Emily Kleidon skated around a defender who reached out and tripped her but as she fell, Kleidon shot and the puck ricocheted off the right post and slid across the crease just missing the left post. Breck went on the power play and came close to scoring with four shots on goal during the two minute minor.
 
The first goal came off a face-off at the 9-minute mark as McMillen collected the puck after winning the face-off and the Packer defender in front of the net left Schipper to cover McMillen and Milica slid a pass to Schipper who was all alone for a shot from about six feet in front of the net.
 
The second goal came after Schipper passed to Kleidon in the left corner and Kleidon gave Schipper a return pass as Kate broke to the net and Schipper shot low and through Katie Fenton for her second goal.
The scoreboard had South St. Paul ahead in shots 12-11 at the end of the first period but Breck had twice as many scoring chances with a 2-0 lead and 3 pipe shots (Kleidon, Schipper and McMillen). The Packers’ shots were from the blueline and the Mustangs’ shots from quick passes in the slot. 
 
Schipper completed her natural hat trick at 1:37 of the second on a 3-2 when McMillen head manned the puck to Schipper and Kate and Kleidon were into the Packer zone on a 2-1. Schipper shot early and beat Fenton on the left side for a 3-0 lead. South St. Paul came back with a quick powerplay goal scored 10 seconds into a 2 minute penalty to cut the lead to 3-1.
 
The fourth goal for Breck started deep in the Breck zone with a Brodersen pass to McMillen who found Schipper with a pass. Schipper carried the puck to the blue line and left a drop pass for McMillen while skating to the right side boards, McMillen picked up the puck and brought it into the zone, stick handled past one defender and as the second defender moved to cover McMillen, Milica deftly sent a pass to Schipper who had broken in undetected on the right side and had three quarters of the net open for the shot and her fourth goal of the day. 
 
Breck’s final goal came 80 seconds later on the penalty kill as Kayla Mork and Carly Schaeder started out on a 2 on 1 after a breakout pass by Karina Marette. Mork held the puck as long as possible then sent a perfect pass to Schaeder as Carly reached the crease to direct the puck into the net for the goal. 
 
 
At the end of the second period, Breck killed a penalty where they outshot the Packers 3-0 and had back to back breakaways with Schaeder shooting high and Fenton getting a stop on Mikki Johnson. The Packers seemed dead after that as they had just one shot on goal in the third period and couldn’t seem to break out of their own zone. 
 
The Mustang defense did a great job of protecting the zone and Taylor Neisen was strong in net when she was needed in the first two periods.

Mustangs win in the first round of the MSHSL Tournament

 

The Mustangs easily outskated, outshot and outscored the New Ulm Eagles this afternoon. New Ulm’s goaltender Shalyn Salonek kept the Eagles in the game by making saves on 22 of 23 first period Mustang shots. The lone goal scored by sophomore Carly Schaeder was her 9th of the season, she was assisted by Kayla Mork and Caitlin Reilly.
 
The Mustangs started to connect in the second period as they scored on 6 of 17 shots. Kayla Mork tallied a hat trick during the period scoring all three with even strength. Milica McMillen and Karina Marette each scored on power plays, while Caroline Griffith scored on a long shot eleven seconds after Mork’s second goal. Griffith’s goal came so quickly after the face-off many Mustang fans missed it as they were still celebrating Mork’s goal.
 
Emily Kleidon was the fastest Mustang breaking out of the zone, beating the defense for two breakaways, she scored twice in the third period, the second goal was a powerplay beauty off a pass from Chris Brodersen.
 
The powerplay stats from the game show the Mustang dominance both on the penalty kill and the power play. Breck had the shots advantage on their penalty kill and while they didn’t tally a shorthanded goal, they came awfully close. Breck scored quickly on three of their four power plays, taking 24 seconds, 47 seconds and 50 seconds to score. Their final scorecard was 3 goals on 4 power plays and 11-0 shots.
 
Goaltender Ahsha Payne recorded her season record 7th shutout and career 11th shutout tying the Breck career mark of 11 set by Amanda Rosequist from 2001-2005. Breck ended the game with a 51-11 shots on goal advantage.

 

Section 5A Champions - Mustangs Win!

GIRLS HOCKEY SECTION 5A CHAMPIONS!
 
The Mustangs thoroughly beat the Bears 3-1 on Thursday evening in a game that could have just as easily been 5 or 6-1. Breck earned the advantage early as Bears goaltender Chloe Billadeau skated out to attempt to beat the onrushing Karina Marette to a loose puck. Billadeau found out too late that her speed was no match for Marette’s, so she dove and attempted a poke check which sent the puck onto Marette’s stick and resulted in an open net goal for the Mustangs. Blake tied the game eight minutes later as Hillary Crowe took a puck out of the corner and mystically walked through the defense to get to the crease for an unassisted goal.
 
The second period was played almost entirely in the Blake end as the Mustangs outshot Blake 15-4. Breck scored on the powerplay early in the period to take a 2-1 lead on a Kayla Mork tip-in of a Hayley Opperman shot from the point. In addition to the 15 shots on goal, Breck had 10-12 shots that went just wide of the net as perfect passes just didn’t connect for goals. Then in the final minute, a Brodersen powerplay shot from the point rebounded 2-3 feet out from Billadeau’s pads and 8th-grader Caitlin Reilly grabbed the puck and flipped in the rebound for a 3-1 lead going into the second intermission.
 
Blake came out strong to start the third but the referees spotted too many Bear players on the ice and the penalty put Breck back in charge. The Mustangs took two penalties close together midway through the period but they killed off the 5-on-3 and then the 5-on-4 portion and the outcome was evident. The only uncertainty was when the Bears would pull Billadeau and whether or not the Mustangs could add an empty netter to make it 4-1. Breck was awarded a penalty shot late in the period as a player other than Billadeau covered the puck in the Bear crease. Kayla Mork took the shot for the Mustangs but missed wide left.
 
Breck advances to their third Minnesota State High School Tournament and will likely play their first game at 11:00 AM on Wednesday as the Tourney’s #2-seed. I expect #1-ranked Warroad to be the #1-seed. See the Bracket below the box score:

The Mustangs are the undefeated 2010 Tri-Metro Conference Champions

 

Feb. 6th, the Mustangs beat Minnehaha 3-0 on Saturday to win their second consecutive Tri-Metro Conference Championship.

Ahsha Payne recorded her sixth shutout of the year to set a new Mustang season record. It was the team’s eleventh shutout of the season, also a Mustang record. The team has allowed only 26 goals in 25 games so far this season, putting the team on a pace to beat the previous team record for goals allowed in a season (38 in 2008-2009) and per game (1.41 in 2008-2009).

The Mustangs are the #1-seed in the Section 5 Playoffs hosted at Parade Stadium and draw a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Breck's first game is the semi-finals vs. Rogers on Feb. 16th at 5:30 p.m. to advance to the Section 5 championship game to be played on Feb. 18th at 7:30 p.m. Blake is the #2-seed and needs to beat St. Louis Park and the Mound/Richfield winner to reach the championship game.

Breck Mustangs win Schwan's Cup Blue Division Championship

The Girls' hockey team had a great showing at the Schwan's Cup Top Division Tournament during the holiday break.  On Monday the Mustangs beat Rochester Mayo, 3-0; on Tuesday the Mustangs beat Redwing 3-0 and on Wednesday beat Benilde St. Margarets 3-2 for the championship at Ridder Arena. The Mustangs records stands at 12-2-0.

Breck Mustangs win Edina's Cake Eater Tournament Championship

The Girls' hockey team had a great showing at the Edina Thanksgiving Cake Eater Tournament.  On Friday the Mustangs beat Edina, ranked #4 in 2A, 1-0 and on Saturday the Mustangs beat Benilde-St. Margaret's ranked #17 in 2A, 2-1.
