Scoring is a sure-fire way to make fans jump from their seats. Big hits and flashy saves can have the same effect, but in girls hockey, the hitting is minimal – and illegal – and the goaltender must face the kind of shots required for a stellar stop.

Reagan Haley and Nicole Schammel each buried a pair of goals, and goaltender Ashley Corcoran got her second straight shutout to open the season as third-ranked (1A) Red Wing cruised to a 6-0 victory over 11th-ranked St. Paul United Thursday in St. Paul.

For years, southern Minnesota was an afterthought when it came to girls high school hockey. The rest of the state didn't seem to take teams seriously from south of the Twin Cities metro area. Now, there's no denying the talent in this part of the state.

For three consecutive seasons, the Red Wing girls hockey team has appeared in the Class A state tournament. And for the last two seasons, the Wingers played in the championship semifinals, falling to Breck in 2012 and Blake in 2013. Of course, that was all with Paige Haley anchoring the defense.
