Chuck Scanlon was a graduate of Richfield High School in 1970. He played college hockey for Bob Peters at Bemidji State where he was an All American Goalie in the early 70’s. In 1973 they won the National Championship. He has been inducted into the Bemidji State Hockey Hall of Fame, and also the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame. He was also selected as a member of the 50 greats for 50 years in B.S.U. Hockey. Chuck pioneered the girls hockey program at Apple Valley High School, and coached them through the first 18 years of their existence. His team won the first ever Girls State Championship in 1995, over South St Paul, before a packed house at Aldrich Arena. They also won the title in 1998 over Hibbing, in the first televised girl’s title game. His team was also a tournament entry in 2003, finishing third. Apple Valley’s Girls Hockey Team accumulated 217 wins and three section championships under Chuck’s leadership. A colleague of Coach Scanlon has said that Chuck continues to be a tireless teacher, coach and mentor for the many, many students that passed through Apple Valley High School since its inception in 1976. Chuck has been coaching high school sports in girl’s hockey, ringette, boy’s soccer, boy’s hockey and baseball. He has directed his teams to 11 state finals and is 11-0 in those contests. In boy’s soccer he has won 9 state titles, and finished 3rd on two other occasions. Chuck also has continued a close relationship with the youth sports clubs in Apple Valley. Part of the success of the high school programs’ has been the strong ties between the high schools and those programs. Chuck has always been able to get his teams to perform well in those “big” games. Chuck and his wife Barbara have four adult children, Chris 34, Andy 31, Danny 29, and Jenna, 27.Chuck, welcome into our first class of Hall of Fame members!
