TOM MAECKELBERGH

Tom Maeckelbergh 2013

Tom is a unique individual. Those that know him well, will tell you that he is always there to help, but he does prefer to remain out of the limelight. One of Tom’s players wrote this about him; “He might not have the great won/loss record, but he believed that development should be available to all, and Tom epitomizes how this game should be played, because it is fun first of all, and then for the satisfaction and beauty that it can provide...anything else is simply frosting on the cake!” Tom was head coach at Fridley/Brooklyn Center High School for 7 seasons, and Andover High School for 5 seasons, and for the past 3 seasons, an assistant at Hopkins High School. Tom looks after the State of Hockey, ensuring that the game develops to the highest possible level, while he continually nurtures the character and well being of his players. Tom has personally seen a large number of teams, on a regular year to year basis, so as to gain a perspective on the level of development, and what areas need concentration and focus in our program structure. His energy and completeness of coverage gives a solid foundation to the programs he implements, including the exhaustive All-State procedure that selects as true an All-State player as can be done. His knowledge of the game and its players are without question a ‘guiding light’ for the programs he runs, and has started. There is no coach that knows more about what we are doing in our girl’s hockey programs, and what is needed to supplement those programs. He actually puts in an enormous amount of time, over so many, many years, to make it all work. He could very well give comment and insight on the vast majority of girl’s hockey players in the State of Minnesota over the last 17 years. Collegiate coaches from many schools have relied on his vast knowledge of player skill level, in setting up their scouting and evaluation data for their schools. Tom’s involvement includes the following. 10 years as All State Committee Director. 9 years as Development Camp Director. 6 years as Elite-II League Director. 5 Years as Junior Fest Director. 4 years as a Section Rep. Section GM and Coach for the Senior Classic. All Tournament team Selection, and Herb Brooks Selection Committee. He can always be found on the bench coaching in almost all programs that require a coach, or needs one. Tom is a special kind of guy, and as a coach he has built his reputation around one theme...how we should treat people. Tom and his wife Holly live in Oak Grove Minnesota. We welcome Tom into our Girl’s Coaches Association Hall Of Fame.
