Prep girls hockey: Pioneer Press All-East Metro team
SARA BUSTAD School: Stillwater Position: Defender/forward Year: Senior A defenseman until this season, she played forward for the Ponies and responded with 14 goals and 13 assists, averaging more than a point a game. Career scoring totals in 96 games: 39 goals and 37 assists. Was a plus-12 this season and plus-45 for her career. Will play defense at Minnesota State Mankato.
Girls hockey: Roseville stops Ponies in section semis
Stillwater was sent to the penalty box just twice on Tuesday, but Roseville took advantage each time while scoring on the power play in a 2-1 Section 4AA semifinal victory at Aldrich Arena. It was the third time the second-seeded Raiders defeated Stillwater this season, but this was easily the most competitive of the three as Roseville outscored the Ponies by a combined 11-1 in their previous encounters.
Girls hockey: Fast start lifts Ponies over Tartan
The Stillwater girls’ hockey team took charge early and did not look back while dispatching Tartan 6-1 in Saturday’s Section 4AA quarterfinal game at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.
Bustad and Bjork are SAHS Athletes of the Week
Senior Sara Bustad delivered a goal and three assists in Stillwater’s 7-2 SEC victory over Park on Jan. 22 and provided a goal in a hard-fought 3-2 loss to conference champion Mounds View on Jan. 19. Bustad, who moved to forward out of necessity but is expected to be a defenseman at Minnesota State-Mankato next winter, leads the Ponies with 12 assists to go along with 11 goals for 23 points, second only to Hannah Okerstrom on the team.

Sara Bustad had a hand in four goals and Hannah Okerstrom added two goals and an assist to help carry Stillwater to a 7-2 Suburban East Conference girls’ hockey victory over Park on Tuesday at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.
Girls hockey: Ponies fall short against Mounds View
Mounds View held off Stillwater 3-2 to wrap up the Suburban East Conference girls’ hockey championship on Saturday at the Schwan Super Rink. The third-ranked Mustangs (14-0-1 SEC, 21-0-1), who also defeated Stillwater (10-5-1, 12-9-1) in a one-goal game earlier this season, have clinched the title outright with three games remaining. Roseville (11-3-0, 15-6-0) remains in second place with 22 points while the Ponies follow in third with 20.
Hersom and Dingle are SAHS Athletes of the Week
Playing an increased role as the season progresses, Brianna Hersom has been solid when in goal all season for the Stillwater girls’ hockey team. The junior turned away 17 shots in Stillwater’s 6-0 Suburban East Conference victory over Woodbury on Friday night. In addition to her shutout against the Royals, Hersom has allowed one goal in three other games and improved to 5-1 on the season after stopping 20 shots in Tuesday’s 8-3 victory over red-hot Forest Lake, which had won seven of its eight past games before falling to the Ponies.

A five-goal second period helped Stillwater pull away from Forest Lake for an 8-3 Suburban East Conference girls’ hockey victory on Tuesday at the FLAAA Sports Center.

Jane Vezina struck twice during Stillwater’s three-goal outburst in the second period as the Ponies rolled to a 6-2 Suburban East Conference victory over White Bear Lake on Thursday at the Vadnais Heights Sports Center.
Girls hockey: Ponies finish fourth at Edina tourney
The Stillwater girls’ hockey team placed fourth at last week’s Edina Abra Holiday Tournament at Braemar Ice Arena. The Ponies (8-7-1) opened the tourney with a 4-2 quarterfinal victory over Coon Rapids, but followed with one-goal losses against Edina (2-1) and Irondale (3-2 in OT) in the semifinals and third-place games.

Pasiuk and Cass are SAHS Athletes of the Week
The Stillwater girls’ hockey team has won five of its last six games after a sluggish start to the season and the Ponies have allowed two goals or less in each of the those five victories. Senior goaltender Allison Pasiuk has been a solid final stop for an improving defensive unit, including several key saves in the third period to help the Ponies rally for a 3-2 win over Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday night.

The Stillwater girls’ hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit to upend Cretin-Derham Hall 3-2 in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference game at Charles M. Schultz – Highland Arena. It was an important win for the Ponies (5-2-0 SEC, 6-4-1) against one of the five league teams currently ranked among the state’s top 20 by Let’s Play Hockey.
Girls hockey: Fast start lifts Ponies over Park
Bouncing back nicely after a loss to Suburban East Conference leader Mounds View last week, the Stillwater girls’ hockey team jumped on Park for four goals in the opening period en route to an 8-2 victory on Saturday at Cottage Grove Ice Arena. The Ponies (4-2-0 SEC, 5-4-1) outshot Park 41-20 — including 20-7 in the second period alone — to bounce back with a strong performance while trying to keep pace in the rugged SEC, which features five teams ranked in the top 20 by Let’s Play Hockey.

Presented a golden opportunity to tighten up the Suburban East Conference race, the Stillwater girls’ hockey team was unable to hold its second-period lead as Mounds View rallied for a 4-3 victory on Tuesday at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

Hannah Okerstrom sparked Stillwater with a power play early and completed the hat trick in the second period while helping the Ponies to a 6-0 Suburban East Conference girls’ hockey victory over Forest Lake on Saturday afternoon at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

Ten different players collected at least one point as the Stillwater girls’ hockey team dispatched Woodbury 7-1 in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference game at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.
Girls hockey: Ponies turn back East Ridge 2-1
It was another one-goal game, but this time the Stillwater girls’ hockey team came out on top in a 2-1 Suburban East Conference victory over East Ridge on Friday night at Bielenberg Sports Center. This marked the third straight game for Stillwater’s that was decided by one goal and was the first victory in four one-goal games overall this season.
Girls hockey: Third-ranked Hornets turn back Stillwater
Unable to continue a first-period flurry which saw the Ponies score three times in less than four minutes, it was Edina that answered the call in Thursday’s 5-4 nonconference girls’ hockey victory at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center. The third-ranked Hornets (4-1-2) scored twice during 36-second stretch late in the first period to tie the game and pulled away with a goal each in the second and third periods.
Girls hockey: Ponies fall to Hastings in OT
HASTINGS — If Tuesday night is any indication, get ready for a wild ride in the Suburban East Conference this season. Four of the five conference games played were decided by one goal and three of those required an extra period to settle, with Stillwater’s 4-3 overtime loss at Hastings among them. “There’s a lot of parity and it’s showing up right now,” Ponies coach Tony Scheid said.
Lumberjacks Rally to Tie Stillwater
Three special teams goals helped Cloquet-Esko-Carlton play Stillwater to a 3-all tie in Saturday’s nonconference girls’ hockey game at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center. The Ponies (1-0-1) jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period and never trailed, but C-E-C used two power play goals and a short-handed tally — all from Emily Gustafson — to salvage a tie. “Saturday sounds like a loss because the kids worked so hard,” Stillwater coach Tony Scheid said. “This is a team that comes to the rink and expects to win. I think we can learn from some of the things.”
Okerstrom Athlete of the Week
The Stillwater girls’ hockey team opened its season with a heavy dose of Hannah in Thursday’s 3-1 nonconference victory over 13th-ranked Blaine at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center. Hannah Okerstrom scored two goals and added an assist — with Hannah Heacox also contributing a goal and two assists — to spark the Ponies in their debut. Okerstrom followed that up with an assist on Saturday as the Ponies settled for a 3-all tie in a nonconference match-up against Cloquet-Esko-Carlton after outshooting the Lumberjacks 53-18, including 8-3 in the overtime period. The ninth-ranked Ponies (1-0-1) face Hill-Murray in a nonconference game on Saturday at Aldrich Arena.
Stillwater girls hockey crew off on right skate
Stillwater girls hockey coach Tony Scheid was looking for his seasoned team to get off to a quick start, and the Ponies did just last week. Not perfect, mind you, after downing Blaine 3-1 in their season-opener, Stillwater headed north for a match-up with Cloquet/Esko/Carlton Saturday, Nov. 17. Despite wheeling to a 2-0 first-period advantag, and out-shooting the Lumberjacks 50-15 for the game, it skated to a 3-3 deadlock.
Ponies knock off Blaine in season opener
The Stillwater girls’ hockey team opened its season on Thursday with a 3-1 nonconference victory over 11th-ranked Blaine at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center. The Ponies (1-0), ranked No. 9 in the preseason state coaches poll, jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead and held on for the victory despite getting outshot 30-27.
Bustad finalizes college plans
Stillwater Area High School seniors Sara Bustad and Claire Rutscher each signed a national letter of intent earlier this week during the early signing period. Bustad, a regular contributor to Stillwater’s successful girls’ hockey program since eighth grade, has signed on with Minnesota State-Mankato.
Bustad Signs Letter of Intent to Play Hockey at Minnesota State University-Mankato
Sara Bustad signed her letter of intent to play Division 1 hockey at Minnesota State University-Mankato next year. Bustad is a 2-time USA Hockey National Camp attendee, as a U16 and U17 defenseman. In addition, she is a 3-year participant in the Upper Midwest Elite Hockey League, a 4-year participant in the Community Olympic/Athletic Development Program (CODP/CADP), and was selected as a member of the Minnesota U18 team for the 2012 Reebock High School National Invitational Tournament (NIT). In the last two years, Bustad has moved from defense to forward, and finished last season with 11 goals and 16 assists in 27 games.
