Brittany Fussy ties school mark with 54 saves in T-G loss
The Benilde St.-Margaret's Red Knights showed why they were the 2nd ranked team in the state tonight. They dominated the game from start to finish, peppering the T-G net with 63 shots in route to a 9-0 victory. Just like in their first meeting this season, the Eagles did not have an answer for Kelly Pannek, who had 2 goals and 2 assists on the night. Red Knight forward Jackie Pieper also had a 4 point night which included a hat trick. Brittany Fussy tied Missy King for the Totino-Grace all-time school record of 54 saves in a game.
Prior to the game, T-G honored their graduating seniors: Captain and goaltender Brittany Fussy, Captain and forward Erin Cullen, and forward Shannon McFarlane. All were thanked for their contributions to the T-G hockey program, as well as to the leadership that they provided to the team this season.
The team finished with a regular season record of 7-15-3. The Eagles finished 5th in the North Suburban Conference with a record of 4-7-1. Captain Erin Cullen was the team leader in points with 22, having 11 goals and 11 assists for the season. Junior forward Kristen Dellich lead the team in goals this season with 13. Sophomore defensemen Laura Minkoff lead the team in assists this season with 13.
The section 4A playoffs begin for the #5 seeded Eagles next Saturday at 5:00pm when they take on the #4 seeded Henry Sibley Warriors, with a record of 15-9 at West St. Paul Arena. The winner of this section playoff game will take on South St. Paul.
Erin Cullen and Kristen Dellich each score a pair in victory
The Eagles made their final regular season road trip up to East Bethel to take on the St. Francis Fighting Saints. In this contest, the coaches took the opportunity to insert some players that have had lesser playing time this season. As to be expected when making a change like this, some of the continuity can be lost. It seemed that T-G's timing was just a little off. Maybe not having the hard-working and hustling Brigitta Zosel available for this game due to injury was the missing piece. In the end, the team fought through the game and came away with a 4-1 victory.
The first period got off to an inauspicious start as St. Francis took advantage of an Eagle turnover and Maddi Kaehler scored just 3:55 into the contest to give the Fighting Saints a 1-0 lead. Neither team was able to sustain an attack for the period until St. Francis forward Jessica St. Marie was whistled for a major boarding penalty at the 8:36 mark. The Eagles put on some pressure during this powerplay and Erin Cullen found the back of the net from Madi Lacy and Katessa Archer. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie, and shots for the period were also even at 5 apiece.
The middle period was a penalty filled affair; again with neither team being able to build up or sustain an attack when the teams were at full strength. Both teams were also battling wet and soft ice, which made the play slow and difficult for the players. With just under 4 minutes left in the period, Brittany Fussy made a great save on a 2 on 1 to keep the game tied. As the period was winding down and T-G was again on the powerplay, Kristen Dellich scored with just 15 seconds remaining, with the assists going to Molly Adam and Kelsey Lyngdal. The Eagles had a 1 goal lead heading into the final period.
At the 7:49 mark of the third period, the trio that ended the second period connected again. For Kristen Dellich, it was her team leading 13th goal of the season. Molly Adam picked up her 5th assist of the season and Kelsey Lyngdal, her 10th assist of the season. Just over 3 minutes later, T-G put the game away when Erin Cullen got her second goal of the game and team leading 22nd point of the season. Abby Huber, returning from injury and playing in her first game of 2012, picked up the assist. Shots for the game were 26-21 in favor of the Eagles.
T-G will play their final regular season home game this Saturday night at 7:30pm (Senior Night) when they host North Suburban Champion and # 2 ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's at Parade Ice Garden.
T-G outplays Spring Lake Park again, but falls one goal short
In the first meeting with Spring Lake Park, T-G played one of their most complete games of the season, but were not rewarded, losing a heartbreaking 1 goal game. The Eagles pulled to within 1 goal in the final minute of the game but were unable to get the equalizer. This game was incredibly similar and unfortunately ended the same way; with the Eagles attempting a furious third period comeback that fell one goal short.
The first period was an evenly played period where both teams had few quality scoring opportunities. The game was scoreless until 3 penalties were whistled within a 38 second span, two of which were called on the Eagles. Playing down a player, Panther captain Karissa Thomson found the back of the net to give Spring Lake Park a 1-0 lead after 1 period of play.
The second period began with great promise. The Eagles were moving the puck very well and slick passing between Madi Lacy and Erin Cullen found Kristen Dellich in front of the net who buried the one-timer to tie the game at 1. For Kristen, it was her team leading 11th goal of the season. The tie was short lived as the Panthers went back in front just 10 seconds later by Rochelle Perzel. Spring Lake Park threatened to extend the lead when Maddy Kelly intercepted a pass and broke in all alone on T-G goaltender Brittany Fussy. Brittany stuffed the attempt to keep the Panther lead at 1. At the 9:05 mark of the period, Rochelle scored again to give Spring Lake Park a 3-1 advantage heading into the second intermission. The Eagles had controlled play for most of the period, having outshot the Panthers 16-9, but found themselves down by 2 with one period to go.
T-G dominated play for most of the third period outshooting Spring Lake Park 14-7, but could not seem to solve Panthers goaltender Mackensay Kelly. With 2:45 remaining in the game, the Panthers were whistled for a major boarding penalty inflicted on Maddy Javorina. Playing one player up for the remainder of the game, the Eagles continued to pepper the Spring Lake Park net. T-G's hard work finally paid off when Shannon McFarlane scored with 31 seconds remaining from Erin Cullen and Laura Minkoff. Just like in their first meeting, the Eagles were unable to get the equalizer and time ran out on them, losing 3-2. Shots for the game were 37-24 in favor of T-G.
The Eagles will next travel to East Bethel for their last road conference game against St. Francis on Thursday (Groundhog Day) at 7:00pm. Dress warm - this is a cold rink. : )
Molly Adam and Maddy Javorina lead T-G to victory
The Eagles stretched their unbeaten streak to 3 games with a convincing 4-1 victory over St. Louis Park. T-G took control of the game right from the drop of the puck and put immediate pressure on Orioles goaltender Hannah Broderson. A nice passing play between Shannon McFarlane and Maddy Javorina set up Molly Adam at the 10:10 mark to put the Eagles up 1-0. About 3 minutes later, Maddy Javorina set up Molly Adam again who notched her 4th goal of the season and her 2nd of the period. St. Louis Park had a golden opportunity later in the period to get on the scoreboard as they fired 3 consecutive point blank shots on Eagles goaltender Brittany Fussy. Brittany made 2 great toe saves and kicked the 3rd one away to keep the Orioles scoreless. T-G took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Eagles continued to dominate play in the 2nd period. T-G blueliner Hannah Johnson was having a strong game and was bottling up the St. Louis Park attack by continually preventing the Orioles from getting the puck out of their zone. T-G was whistled for a tripping penalty just a couple of minutes into the period, and even being one player down, they continued to attack. Laura Minkoff found Kristen Dellich who popped out from behind the Oriole net and fired a backhand shot to score her team leading 10th goal of the season at the 14:37 mark. The Eagles increased their lead to 4-0 when Kelsey Lyngdal weaved her way up the ice and finished a classic give and go with Erin Cullen on the powerplay. For Kelsey, it was her first goal of the season.
T-G enjoyed roughly a 2-1 shooting advantage through the first 2 periods. The big question entering the final period was whether the Eagles could keep the Orioles off the scoreboard for their goaltender. With less than 6 1/2 minutes remaining, T-G lost the draw in their end and a bang bang play from Leah Schrank to Sophia Noreen ended Brittany's shutout bid. Shots for the game were 43-32 in favor of the Eagles.
T-G will next return to Parade Ice Garden on Saturday at 3:00pm to take on Spring Lake Park in a key North Suburban conference showdown.
T-G goaltender preserves draw
Back in mid-December, the Eagles went toe to toe with # 12 Irondale and although T-G had the better of the play, it was the Knights that eked out the victory. Tonight's contest was another close, hard fought game, and when it was over, there was no winner as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The first period was a back and forth flowing game, with both teams having scoring chances but the goaltenders for both teams were up to the task. Shots in the period were even at 8-8, and the game was scoreless heading into the first intermission.
The Knights pressed the attack in the second period, and the goal post became Eagle goalie Brittany Fussy's best friend. Irondale's leading scorer, Sam Donovan hit the post 3 times in the game, twice in the period, the first coming on a T-G powerplay when she intercepted a pass and came down the right side. In a fast moving period that saw the Knights outshoot T-G 11-4, the game remained scoreless with only a couple of minutes remaining before the second intermission. With just 1:45 to go, Alex Toupal hit Sam Donovan coming down the slot where she let go a one-timer for her 45th goal of the season and a 1-0 Knights lead.
Just like in the first contest, the Eagles entered the third period trailing, but they did not seemed fazed in the least. Erin Cullen intercepted a cross ice pass and broke in on Knights goaltender Gillian McDonald and scored her 9th goal of the season at the 12:54 mark to tie the game. The teams continued to battle throughout the period. The Eagles dodged a bullet while killing off a penalty when Sam Donovan hit the post again with 7:23 remaining. The game remained tied at 1 at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, Irondale turned up the pressure trying to get the game winner, but Brittany Fussy turned aside all 8 shots she faced. For the game, T-G was outshot 33-16, but the only stat that counts is the final score. Irondale came into the contest having won 7 of 8 conference games and having an overall record of 18-2.
The Eagles will next take on the Orioles of St. Louis Park at the Rec Center on Tuesday night at 6:30pm.
Team cruises to 3-0 victory
Playing in a cold rink didn't cool off the Eagles convincing performance in route to a 3-0 victory over Minnehaha Academy. T-G outshot the Saints in each period and had a 34-16 advantage for the game. Despite outplaying Minnehaha Academy, the first period was scoreless.
The Eagles continued to control the play in the second period. A defensive breakdown gave the Saints a golden opportunity to break the 0-0 tie at the 10:08 mark when Mara Raymond broke in all alone, but Brittany Fussy came up big to keep the game deadlocked. The Eagles got what proved to be the game winning goal at the 13:09 mark of the second period when Shannon McFarlane notched her second goal of the season from Molly Adam and Kelsey Lyngdal. That was the lone goal of the period.
As play was more wide open in the third period, T-G continued to press the attack. Kristen Dellich finished off the play from Laura Minkoff to give the Eagles a little more of a cushion increasing their lead to 2-0 with just 5:54 left to play. For Kristen, it was her team leading 9th goal of the season. With just over 2 minutes remaining, Minnehaha Academy pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker. With 1:10 left in the period, Maddy Javorina intercepted a pass and was streaking towards the Saints empty net. Minnehaha forward Sara Lind pulled her down before she could get off the shot. The referee awarded Maddy a penalty shot, and per the rules, when it is deemed imminent that a player will score when there is no goaltender in the net, the player is automatically awarded the goal. Minnehaha challenged the call and the head referee agreed to show the Saints coach the rule that backed up his call. The games was delayed nearly 10 minutes, but when the referee returned with the specific cite to show head coach Evan Ziegler, the goal was officially counted and play resumed. For Maddy, it was her 6th goal of the year. There was no further scoring in the contest. For Eagle netminder Brittany Fussy, she earned her second shutout of the season.
Next up for T-G will be # 11 ranked Irondale on Saturday at Parade Ice Garden at 3:00pm.
