Skippers shut out BSM in Section 6AA championship game

The Red Knights season came to a swift end at the hands of Minnetonka as the top ranked Skippers showed their skill and experience in defeating BSM in the Section 6AA championship game 4-0.  The Red Knights battled Minnetonka even in a scoreless first period as each team managed 9 shots on goal.  The game turned in a 1:14 span early in the second period as Minnetonka scored 2 goals.  The Skippers had the territorial advantage in the period and held the Red Knights to a season low 3 shots for the period.  Minnetonka added a 3rd goal at the 5:22 mark of the period to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Red Knights came out hard in the final period but were not able to solve Minnetonka netminder Julie Friend, who stopped all 23 shots she faced.  The Skippers added a powerplay goal in the third period to complete the scoring.  Shots for the game were 24-23 in favor of Minnetonka.  It was the first time this season that the Red Knights were shutout.  BSM ended the season with a final record of 23-3-1.  The Red Knights have a bright future in front of them as the majority of the team will return next season.

BSM overcomes slow start in defeating Hopkins 4-0

It seemed that Minnetonka and BSM have been on a collision course all season, and the Section 6AA championship game on Friday night between the 2 teams will decide who will go to the State Tournament.  Back in mid-December, the Skippers beat the Red Knights 2-1 in overtime.  There is a lot more on the line this time around.

Following Minnetonka's 6-1 win over Buffalo in the first semi-final, it was the Red Knights turn to take on a very determined Hopkins Royals squad.  Hopkins played a conservative skating first period and outshot BSM 6-5.  The Red Knights made the most of their best scoring opportunity as Kelly Pannek continued her hot goal scoring streak by beating the Hopkins netminder with just 2:14 remaining in the period.  Two key plays would follow that would change the momentum of the game in BSM's favor.  With just under a minute remaining in the first period and the Red Knights killing off a penalty, Tiana Press robbed the Hopkins forward on the doorstep to preserve the 1 goal BSM lead heading into the first intermission.  With the score still 1-0 with just under 3 minutes remaining in the second period, Jordyn Burns took a pass from Brittany Wheeler and Caitlin Reilly to score a huge goal to put the Red Knights up 2-0 heading into the 3rd period.  BSM added 2 more goals in the third period to seal the victory.  Brittany Wheeler scored from Jordyn Burns and Sara Taffe, and Kelly Pannek added an empty net goal from Jordyn Burns.  Tiana Press turned aside all 15 shots she faced and has now logged consecutive shutouts in the Section playoffs.

Parade Arena should be jumping on Friday night as the top ranked Skippers and #3 ranked Red Knights square off to determine who will move on to St. Paul.

Burns, Pannek, and T. Press shine in 2-0 victory over the Stars

The Red Knights advanced to the Section 6AA semi-finals against Hopkins on Wednesday night at 7:30pm at Parade Ice arena with a tough 2-0 victory over North Metro.  BSM outshot the Stars 54-13, but North Metro goaltender Kayla Kreuter had a stellar game in net to keep the game close.  She surrendered only 1 goal in 8 Red Knight power play opportunities.

BSM got their first goal of the game from Kelly Pannek at 11:37 of the opening period from Jordyn Burns.  It was Pannek's 32nd goal of the season and Burns' 22nd assist of the season.  The Red Knights outshot the Stars 21-5 in the first period, but had to settle for just a 1-0 lead going into the intermission.

The game became more physical in the second period and BSM would make North Metro pay by scoring their second goal of the game on the powerplay.  This time Kelly Pannek assisted on Jordyn Burns' 15th goal of the season to give the Red Knights a little more breathing room.  It turned out to be the last goal scored in the game. Tiana Press recorded her 7th shutout of the season and improved her record to 17-2-1.

The Red Knights completed their quest to reclaim the North Suburban Conference championship with a convincing 5-1 victory over Irondale.  BSM finished with an 11-0 conference record where they outscored their opponents 76-7.  Another strong defensive effort limited Irondale to few quality scoring chances in the game.
