RED WING — The Winger girls hockey team responded to losing the best player in program history — Rose Alleva, who is now playing at Princeton — in impressive fashion this winter.

Red Wing won the consolation title last weekend in the Class A state tournament and brought home a number of individual accolades. Chief among them was coach Scott Haley being named Class A Coach of the Year at Sunday's Ms. Hockey Banquet in St. Paul.

The Wingers finished the season 16-13-1 after starting the year 2-4-1. They also bounced back from a potentially devastating 5-2 loss to Eveleth-Gilbert in the state quarterfinals — allowing three goals in the final six minutes — to end the year on a high note.

"It's actually more of a credit to the kids than any of us coaches because they're the ones who have to put in the work," Haley said, deflecting the credit in typical fashion. "The two prior teams kind of led the way for the years to come just by creating a kind of tradition."

Red Wing qualified for its first state tournament in the 2008-09 season, finishing third. It lost in the section title game last year before returning this winter.

Haley has previously been honored as the Missota Conference coach of the year while also being selected as one of two coaches across the state to attend an Olympic training session at Lake Placid.

His daughters, sophomore Paige and eighth-grader Reagan, were among those individuals honored in recent days.

Paige, a high-scoring defender, was named to the All-Tournament Team and all-state honorable mention at the Ms. Hockey banquet. She posted three goals and three assists in the three state games after finishing the regular season with 22 goals and 25 assists.

The two Haley girls, freshman forward Nicole Schammel and junior goalie Lisa Nibbe were named all-state honorable mention by the Pioneer Press.

The Wingers lose just three to graduation, including senior goalie Quinn McGough, who earned academic all-state honors.
