Girls Hockey Class A | Red Wing wins consolation trophy

ST. PAUL — Red Wing seized a 5-2 lead after two periods, then held on for a 5-4 victory over Hutchinson in the consolation final of the Class A girls state high school hockey tournament Saturday.

Sophomore Paige Haley scored two goals and ninth-graders Nicole Schammel and Emily Stegora  and junior Cori Fairbanks one each to get Red Wing the 5-2 lead.

Junior Lisa Nibbe held firm in the net for the Wingers (16-13-1), turning away a barrage of late-minute shots by the Tigers (15-15-1) and finishing with 33 saves.

Warroad won the championship game 5-1 over South St. Paul. Warroad (27-3-0) outscored its opponents 21-1 in the three games of the state tournament.

Breck defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 6-4 for third place.

Minnetonka beat Edina 3-2 in the AA title game. Coon Rapids edged Hill-Murray 5-4 in two overtimes for third place and it was Elk River/Zimmerman over  Lakeville South 2-1 in the consolation final.
