Red Wing coach Scott Haley said that the Wingers held onto the puck too much Wednesday night in their Class A quarterfinal loss to Eveleth-Gilbert, but it didn't take them long to remedy the problem.

The Wingers defeated Alexandria 5-2 in the consolation semifinals Thursday afternoon at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. Red Wing advanced to play Hutchinson at 10 a.m. Saturday in the consolation finals at Ridder Arena.

"That was probably one of our better games in the last month here," Haley said. "I thought the kids moved the puck real well. We kind of got away from that a little bit. That was nice to see."

Nicole Schammel scored Red Wing's first two goals and assisted on Paige Haley's goal. Annie Gorman continued her hot streak, scoring Red Wing's final two goals in the third period. Both were unassisted.

Gorman has scored four goals in her last three games. The senior forward netted four goals in the first 26 games of the season.

Reagan Haley registered assists on the first three goals.

Senior Quinn McGough received the start in goal and made 34 saves to earn the win.

"I thought she did good," Wingers coach Scott Haley said. "It felt like the right thing to do for her. She's been playing well in practice."

In starting McGough, Haley was able to get starting goaltender Lisa Nibbe some rest. Nibbe played Wednesday against the Golden Bears.
