SAINT PAUL — Red Wing's girls hockey team wasted no time in putting its opening-round loss in the rearview.

The Wingers scored the first three goals of the game, including two by freshman forward Nicole Schammel, as they claimed a 5-2 victory this afternoon over Alexandria in the consolation bracket of the Class A state tournament.

Eveleth-Gilbert had defeated the Wingers 5-2 by scoring three late goals just 14 hours prior to the game against Alexandria.

Schammel, who finished ninth in the state in goals during the regular season, spurred the strong start. After being handcuffed by a bigger, stronger team Wednesday night, she scored late in the first period today to give the Wingers a 1-0 lead. She scored again early in the second and added an assist to Paige Haley late in the period to give her team a 3-0 lead.

Eighth-grader Reagan Haley assisted on all three goals.

Alexandria twice cut the lead to just two goals — on shots by Rachael Finley and Claire Illies — but Annie Gorman scored two unassisted goals in the third period to keep the Cardinals at arm's length.

Both teams finished with one power-play goal.

Red Wing senior goalie Quinn McGough made her first start of the postseason and made 34 saves. Alexandria goalie Stephanie Drown finished with 26 saves.

The Wingers advance to the consolation finals where they will face Hutchinson, which was a 7-1 winner over New Ulm earlier in the day. That game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Ridder Arena.
