OWATONNA — The Owatonna High School gym was buzzing with western-clad students and faculty Friday morning as the final day of Snow Week kicked off with a pep fest.

Ten seniors vying for the Snow Week king and queen title entertained the crowd with skits performed with the help of fellow classmates. From music and comedy to athletics and everything in between, the Snow Week court showed off their moves in absurd skits that had the school in both fits of laughter and groans of comic disapproval.

The five girls on the Snow Week court were Samantha Sorvagg, Paige Lysne, Cailyn McCauley, Mary Bridget Reller and Breezy Pitan.

Sorvagg is the daughter of Joseph and Deedre Sorvagg. She’s involved in concert choir, National Honor Society, carolers and theater. She plans to attend Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. Sorvagg’s skit included a guitar and singing performance about vegetables, which were colorfully represented by several of Sorvagg’s classmates.

Lysne is the daughter of Mark and Gwen Lysne. She plays hockey and soccer and has earned five varsity letters in each sport along with honorable mention and all-conference titles in soccer and hockey as well. Lysne plans to attend the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire to study biology and play hockey. Lysne’s performance was inspired by the class Disney production, Pochahontas.

McCauley is the daughter of Sarah and Scott McCauley. She plays hockey, softball and soccer and has received the All State title in soccer. McCauley plans to attend Winona State next year to play soccer and become a math teacher with a coaching minor. McCauley wowed the audience with the opening skit of an illusion of dancing little people to a mashup of several hip hop songs.

Reller is the daughter of Wendy and Steve Reller. Her involvement at OHS includes numerous plays, writing for the Magnet and Chimera and singing in the concert choir. Last spring, Reller was crowned Owatonna Junior Miss. She plans to attend St. Scholastica and hopes to enlist in the Peace Corps after college.

Pitan is the daughter of Del and Janda Pitan. She’s active in concert band, symphony orchestra, concert choir, athletic training and varsity softball. Pitan was awarded the Josten’s Musician of the Year award as well as the AAA Award. Pitan will be playing softball and studying public relations next year at Florida State University. Pitan kept the crowd laughing with a rendition of a classic Saturday Night Live skit.

The five boys accompanying the girls on the Snow Week court included Javier Torres, Michael Schwab, Nathan Bunkers, Logan Barrett and Parker Butler.

Torres is the son of Guadalupe and Alfredo Torres. Torres runs track and won the Student of the Year award two years in a row. He plans to attend the University of Minnesota next fall for engineering. Torres’ skit included a OHS rendition of the Wizard of Oz where he starred in the show as Dorothy.

Schwab is the son of Jack and Barb Schwab. He played basketball and ran cross country all four years in high school. Schwab is also a member of DECA. He plans to attend the Minnesota College of Business Sciences where he will study biochemistry. Schwab’s performance included a cameo by the OHS boys basketball team.

Bunkers is the son of Brian and Kari Bunkers and he plans to attend Kansas University in the fall. Bunkers wowed the crowd with a dance skit.

Barrett is the son of Bruce and Elaine Barrett. He is a wrestler for OHS and he plans “to go to college, graduate, get a job, get married and have kids who will go on to wrestle for Coach Davis and win lots.” Barrett’s performance portrayed a “typical wrestling match,” where he overpowers his opponent and is victorious.

Butler is the son of Barry and Lori Butler.

After all 10 skits were done, and the traditional tug-of-war games were finished, it was time to crown the Snow king and queen.

The candidates waited to be crowned and it was Lysne and Torres who would become the 2011 OHS Snow Week king and queen. Snow Week concluded with a western hoedown dance Friday night, just before Big 9 meets got underway today.
