ROCHESTER — The Owatonna girls hockey team picked up a big win and four Big Nine Conference points Tuesday.

Abby Sawyer scored two goals and Emily Cochran potted a short-handed goal as the conference-leading Huskies beat Rochester Century 4-1 in the only meeting between the teams this season. Because the teams only play once, the game was worth four points in the standings instead of two.

Owatonna (7-0 Big Nine, 10-4 overall) now has 18 points, just ahead of second-place Rochester Mayo, which has 17. The Spartans have played two more conference games than Owatonna.

The Huskies led 3-1 after the first period and out-shot the Panthers 33-13.

OHS will try to extend its conference lead with another four-point game at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at Mankato East/Loyola.

The Huskies play at home at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Dodge County. That game will cap an all-day celebration of girls hockey in Owatonna with U10, U12 and U14 girls games being played earlier in the day. All girls youth players will get free admission if they wear their jersey.

OHS scoring: First period—Abby Sawyer (Emily Cochran) 1:11; Shelby Noble (Payton Noble, Cailyn McCauley) 6:48; Cochran (McCauley, Paige Lysne) 15:54 (sh); Third period—Sawyer (Aimee Goodew) 11:19. OHS goalie: Keshia Reuvers 12 saves.
