BSM defeats 2 Wisconsin teams to reach final

The Red Knights had to play 2 grind it out games against 2 pesky and ranked Wisconsin teams to reach the finals of the Schwan's Cup tournament.  They won both games in low scoring contests while limiting their opponents scoring opportunities.

In the tournament opener, the Red Knights faced Sun Prairie Co-op.  BSM opened strong outshooting their opponent 17-3.  Kelly Pannek got the first of her 2 goals in the game at the 8:01 mark of the period with the assists going to Brittany Wheeler and Jordyn Burns.  The Red Knights got a huge goal on the powerplay with just 1 second remaining in the period on Sara Taffe's first goal of the season from Caitlin Reilly and Brittany Wheeler.

Each team traded goals in the second period, with the BSM tally going to Kelly Pannek and the assists to Caitlin Reilly and Brittany Wheeler again.  Abbey Miller started in goal and earned her 3rd victory of the season, staying unbeaten at the Varsity level.  Shots for the game were 40-15.  The victory propelled the Red Knights into the semi-finals against St. Croix (River Falls, WI).

The game against St. Croix had an ominous start as the Fusion scored just 44 seconds into the contest.  It was the first time the Red Knights had trailed in the first period this season, and the first time they trailed after the first period.  Shots in the period were 7-7 as St. Croix played a strong defensive style game.  Down 1-0, BSM started to control play in the second period, putting 10 shots on the Fusion netminder, while not allowing a shot in the period.  It was the first time BSM did not allow a shot on goal for a period.  Their hard work paid off as Cat Kernan tied the game at 2:32 of the period with the assists going to her line mates Aly Hoffman and Bailey Forcier.  The game was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd period.

The Red Knights dominated the play in the third period outshooting St. Croix 18-3.  It looked like overtime was looming until with just 18 seconds remaining in the period, Kelly Pannek got the game winner on the powerplay from Brittany Wheeler and Caitlin Reilly.  It was Pannek's 3rd goal of the tournament and moved the Red Knights into the championship game against North Fargo at Ridder Arena at 6:00pm on Wednesday.
