Skipper's deflected shot in OT sinks Red Knights

This game pitted 2 of the top 4 teams in the state in a battle that may have just begun, as both teams may be headed for a collision course to meet again later this season in the section playoffs.

In a very well played contest, Minnetonka prevailed in overtime by a score of 2-1.  The Skippers had the better of play in a scoreless first period as they outshot the Red Knights 11-3.  Tiana Press played very well keeping Minnetonka off the scoreboard.  BSM may have felt a bit of a hangover in the first period following their 2 previous conference blowout wins.

The Skippers applied pressure to start the second period and it paid off as Paige Baldwin found the back of the net at the 25 second mark of the period.  From there, the Red Knights picked up their play and the game was much more even for the remainder of the period.  Tiana Press made a key save with just 1:30 remaining after the Red Knights lost the draw in their own end and the Skipper was stoned following a centering pass from point blank range.  That proved to be a key save in the game.  Minnetonka had to settle for a 1-0 lead going into the third period.

BSM applied more pressure in the third period and they were seeing better scoring opportunities.  Their hard work finally paid off as with just 1:15 remaining in the period, a beautiful tic-tack-toe passing combination from Jordyn Burns to Caitlin Reilly to Kelly Pannek tied the game.  For Pannek, it was her 10th goal of the season, and for Caitlin Reilly, it extended her game scoring streak to 7 games.  The arena was buzzing as the overtime period began.  Just 2:23 into the overtime period, Amy Petersen deflected a shot from the point from Rachel Ramsey for the game winner.  The referees conferred and agreed that the deflection was not made with a high stick and the contest was suddenly over.

Minnetonka outshot the Red Knights 27-16 for the game.  It was only the second loss of the season for BSM, with both losses coming to teams ranked in the top 3 in the state.  The loss also ended the Red Knights 9 game unbeaten streak.  BSM will return to conference play taking on 6-3 Chisago Lakes next Tuesday night at Chisago Lakes Arena at 7:00pm.
