OWATONNA — Emily Cochran scored the tying and game-winning goals in Owatonna’s second straight victory to start the season.

Ninth-grader Payton Noble also scored as Owatonna defeated Champlin Park 3-2 on Tuesday night in girls hockey action at the Four Seasons Centre.

With the win, Owatonna improved to 2-0 on the season. The Huskies have already defeated Rochester Mayo and a Twin Cities school this year after going 0-8-2 against the Spartans and metro teams last fall.

“It’s definitely a boost for us,” OHS coach Tim Hunst said. “The big thing is the girls knew they had to buckle down and do the little things. If you make a mistake, good teams make you pay. We avoided mistakes tonight.”

Owatonna trailed for most of the game as Champlin Park scored a power-play goal in the first and second period. The Huskies rallied with three goals in second period to take a 3-2 lead. The third goal came after Owatonna senior Aimee Goodew battled to get a shot off. The puck bounced off of Champlin Park goalie Jessie Johnson and slid up the ice right to Cochran, who just came in on a line change. She secured the puck and slapped it past Johnson to give Owatonna its first lead with 2 minutes, 34 seconds left in the second period. Hunst said Goodew played a big role in both of Cochran’s goals.

“On both of (Cochran’s) goals, Aimee Goodew got in there and battled like crazy,” Hunst said. “(Goodew) created the turnovers and Emily pounced on it and put it away.”

Owatonna bombarded Johnson all night and finished with 42 shots on goal.

“It’s not necessarily that we are better passers, we are more confident passers and it has really shown this year,” Hunst said.

The Rebels looked unstoppable on the power play in the first two periods.

On their first power play, Champlin Park had three solid shots on goal in the first seven seconds. Hailey Adair scored both power-play goals.

The Rebels had three power-play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 in the final seven minutes of the game. Unlike the first two periods, Owatonna’s penalty-kill unit kept the puck out of the net. Champlin Park ended the game on the power play.

“Their power play was great,” Hunst said. “Their puck movement was big. They had such quick sticks on those rebounds. You have to give them credit. Power play was one of their biggest areas of strength.

“We had to find a way to stop them and thankfully we were able to do that.”

Owatonna puts its perfect record on the line at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Blake. Hunst, who won his 150th career game on Thursday, looks for his first victory against Bears (1-0).

“They are fast and they are deep,” Hunst said. “They are a very, very disciplined team.”
