Girls Hockey: Sing sparks Willmar to fifth straight win

HUTCHINSON — Ali Sing was in a giving mood on her birthday Thursday.

Sing netted the last two goals for Willmar, including the game-winner in overtime, to help give the Cardinals their fifth straight win as they edged Hutchinson 5-4 in a non-conference girls hockey game.

Hutchinson (3-5) tied the game at 4-all after two periods and both teams were shut out in the third to force overtime.

Kayte Cole raced down the left side of the rink and fired a shot that Hutchinson goalie Mary Cummins made a save on. But the Tigers failed to clear the puck and Sing put the rebound into the back of the net to give Willmar its fifth straight win after opening the season 0-2.

“We didn’t play our best game, but they have some very nice players on their team,” said Willmar coach Chad Akerson. “We didn’t quit and we are starting to find ways to finish out games on the winning side.”

Carlie Freese unassisted and Cole from KyLee Hulscher and Brittney Serbus gave Willmar a 2-0 lead after 14 minutes of play. Hutchinson then netted the next three goals before Erin Sheehan scored the Cardinals’ fourth powerplay goal in their last two games to tie the game at 3-all.

The Tigers answered back 6½ minutes later to regain the lead, but Sing tied the game again with just 1:47 left in the second period.

Willmar will look to extend its win streak Saturday when it plays St. Peter at 3 p.m. in Le Sueur
