With less than two minutes to play, Nicole Schammel and Reagan Haley hooked up to give Red Wing a 4-3 lead in Saturday’s nonconference game against Irondale.

But the Knights responded with two goals of their own, including the game-winner 90 seconds into overtime, to hand the Wingers a 5-4 road loss.

Red Wing battled from behind most of the game as Irondale got out to a 1-0 lead when Alex Toupal scored 12 minutes, 28 seconds into the first period. Katelyn Hadler tied the game for the Wingers at 14:44 on an assist from Schammel.

The Knights would take the lead for a second time when Maddie Hentges beat Red Wing goaltender Ashley Corcoran at 4:54 of the second period. Haley, on assists from Kayla Oberding and Caitie Turcotte, scored at 15:40 to knot the game 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

Toupal scored a second time to give Irondale the lead once again at 4:26 before Emily Stegora, at 8:24, evened things up on assists from Haley and Schammel.

Schammel then scored to give the Wingers a lead at 15:11. But that advantage would last just 70 seconds before Toupal completed her hat trick at 16:25. Hentges scored at 1:30 of overtime to end the game.

Corcoran made 29 saves in the loss. Red Wing had 37 shots on goal.

The Wingers (12-6-0) will get back into Missota Conference play Tuesday with a trip to New Prague (9-10-0). Chaska/Chanhassen (13-4-1) will visit Prairie Island Arena Thursday.
