Two Red Wing hockey games went to overtime Thursday, each with a different outcome. The boys, at home, won. The girls, on the road at No. 8 Orono, lost. And, at least by the game clock, the two decisions came just 11 seconds apart.

In a battle of two top-10 Class 1A schools, Brianna Bren scored 2 minutes, 15 seconds into extra time to give the Spartans a 4-3 victory over the third-ranked Wingers.

Emily Stegora, who had two of Red Wing’s goals, got the Wingers on the board at 9:48 of the first period, tying the game 1-1. Orono responded with the first two goals after the first intermission before Reagan Haley, at 10:23, and Stegora, at 13:46, were able to pull Red Wing even once again.

Haley added an assist to her one goal. Nicole Schammel and Maddy Hardyman also had assists. Ashley Corcoran stopped 32 of the 36 shots she faced in the loss.

The Wingers (8-3) will play another ranked team Saturday when No. 11 Breck comes to Prairie Island Arena for a 3 p.m. faceoff. The game is the first at home for Red Wing since a Dec. 10 victory over New Prague. The Wingers will take a few days off for Christmas and then take off to New Hope for a tournament starting Dec. 26.
