Girls Hockey: Wingers suffer first defeat

Sydney Kaye’s goal 44 seconds into the third period was the difference in the game as Chaska/Chanhassen handed top-ranked Red Wing its first loss of the season, 5-4 on Thursday.

Kayla Oberding and Nicole Schammel each scored first-period goals for the Wingers, though the Hawks tied the game 2-2 at 16:59 of the opening frame.

Chaska/Chanhassen also scored to open the second period, but Reagan Haley and Emily Stegora put the Wingers back on top with goals at 7:05 and 9:01, respectively. The Hawks then tied the game at 11:48.

Ashley Corcoran made 34 saves in the loss.

The Wingers (7-1) will face third-ranked Blake (7-3) Saturday in a rematch of the 2013 Class A state semifinals.
