“It was nice in the sense that a lot of kids got to play in some different positions,” said Red Wing head coach Scott Haley. “(We) got to mix the lines up in the third to kind of give us a little snap shot of what we’d be looking at next year once Emily (Stegora) and Nicole (Schammel) move on. So that was kind of nice.

“Overall, (it was) kind of a sloppy hockey game. But it’s really hard when you’re up 5-0 after one.”

That big, early lead came courtesy of some textbook puck movement from Red Wing. Schammel got the scoring started 1 minute, 59 seconds into the game on assists from Stegora and Reagan Haley. Schammel netted her second goal on a hard wrist shot at 5:44 before the Eagles defense started to clamp down.

But Totino-Grace could not muster much offensively, and the Wingers took advantage. Haley scored her first of two goals at 11:07 before Schammel completed her hat trick at 13:00. Haley, who had assisted on Schammel’s second goal as well, scored the only goal of the second period.

Maddy Hardyman closed the scoring in the first period before adding a second goal in the third. Stegora added an assist on Haley’s second goal, and Schammel assists on the final two goals of the game. Kelsey Corcoran has the second assist on Hardyman’s first goal.

For Stegora, two more helpers has her at 14 assists for the season, which ties for the team lead. Half of those assists have come in the last two games, and, she said, are simply a byproduct of how the team is supposed to play.

“Our goal for our line is to move the puck like ping-pong, just get it back and forth and shoot. That’s how we get all of our goals,” Stegora said. With five goals, Stegora is third on the team with 19 points, behind Haley (eight goals, 14 assists, 22 points) and Schammel (15 goals, eight assists, 23 points), her top-line teammates.

For all of the offensive exploits, and there are many, the Wingers also had goaltender Ashley Corcoran stopping all 32 shots she faced, several of which came from point blank with a dozen skates in her way.

“(The traffic) makes me focus a lot, and in those situations I really fight for the puck because no one wants a goal. Especially me,” Corcoran said.

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up, the Wingers (5-0) will have some time off before their next contest. Tuesday’s upcoming game against Irondale has been postponed, so Red Wing will not take the ice again until Thursday, Dec. 5 at Shakopee.
