Girls hockey: Red Wing rolls into Section 1A final

RED WING — Three Red Wing players combined for 25 points and the Wingers rolled into the Section One, Class A girls hockey tournament championship game with a 13-1 victory against Waseca in a section semifinal game Saturday.

Nicole Schammel (four goals, five assists); Reagan Haley (three goals, six assists) and Emily Stegora (three goals, four assists) led the way for Red Wing, which is seeking its second consecutive state tournament trip. The Wingers placed fourth last season.

The Wingers outshot the Blue Jays, 66-21, and led 6-1 after one period and 9-1 after two periods.

Paige Haley (one goal, three assists) and Maddy Hardyman (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point games for the top-seeded Wingers, who are ranked No. 3 in the latest Class A state poll. Kayla Oberding also had one goal.

Maddy Knoll scored fourth-seeded Waseca's only goal.

Red Wing advances to the Section 1A championship game, scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday in Owatonna. The Wingers will face No. 2 seed New Prague, which was a 5-2 winner against Northfield in Saturday's other section semifinal game.
