The Red Wing girls hockey team received a wake-up call Jan. 15 with a 4-3 loss to sixth-ranked (1A) New Prague at home.

It appears the desired effect came out of that loss as the Wingers finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak in which they outscored opponents 34-4.

On Saturday, Red Wing ended the season with an 8-0 dismantling of Simley at Veteran’s Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights.

Six players scored for the Wingers (23-2) Saturday with junior Nicole Schammel contributing three goals and two assists, adding to her state-leading totals of 61 goals and 104 points.

Red Wing sophomore Reagan Haley finished with a goal and three assists. Her 46 assists this season are second in the state.

Senior Paige Haley had a goal and two assists, junior Emily Stegora scored a goal and had two assists, and junior Hailee Johnson tallied a goal and an assist. Seventh-grader Taylor Heise netted a goal and sophomore Kayla Oberding supplied an assist for the Wingers in the victory.

Heise scored the first goal of the game for Red Wing at 5 minutes, 39 seconds of the first period, followed by a first-period hat trick by Schammel to give the Wingers a 4-0 lead.

Paige Haley had Red Wing’s lone goal in the second period, unassisted at 3:00.

At 1:38 of the third period, Johnson scored with assists to Reagan Haley and Stegora. Little more than a minute later, Reagan Haley scored for a 7-0 lead with an assist to Schammel. Stegora tallied the Wingers’ final goal at the 11:42 mark.

Sophomore Ashley Corcoran picked up her 23rd win of the season in net for Red Wing, making seven saves in the shutout.

The Section 1A tournament begins today with the top-seeded Wingers receiving a first-round bye. Red Wing will play host to the winner of Waseca and Albert Lea at 7 p.m. Saturday at Prairie Island Arena.
