Girls Hockey: Wingers clinch Missota crown

Junior Nicole Schammel had her 10th hat trick of the season to help Red Wing clinch the Missota Conference title in an 8-1 win over Farmington Thursday night.

Junior Nicole Schammel had her 10th hat trick of the season to help Red Wing clinch the Missota Conference title in an 8-1 win over Farmington Thursday night.

With her three goals and three assists, Schammel now has 54 goals and 40 assists on the season.

The third-ranked (1A) Wingers took an early 2-0 lead during the opening period after goals by junior Emily Stegora and Schammel. Red Wing stretched that lead to 4-0 with a power-play goal by senior Paige Haley and one of Schammel’s goals in the second period.

Sophomore Kayla Oberding scored less than two minutes into the third period to put the Wingers ahead 5-0.

Farmington had its first, and only, goal of the game at 8 minutes, 27 seconds of the third period by Grace Gavin.

Red Wing then got two goals from sophomore Reagan Haley and Schammel’s final goal to secure the 8-1 win.

Red Wing is now 6-1 in the Missota Conference and 21-2 overall. Farmington falls to 0-7, 4-17-2.

The Wingers play host to No. 14 (1A) Northfield on Jan. 31, then head to Simley on Feb. 2 for the regular-season finale.
