Knights score game winner with just 1 second left in OT

How long is one second…a twitch, a sneeze, or just the blink of an eye?  That’s all that remained in overtime when Irondale forward Sena Hanson’s shot from the left circle on the powerplay somehow found the back of the net, taking at least 1 lucky deflection along the way.  For Sena, it was her team leading 5th game winning goal of the season that gave the Knights a 2-1 victory over the Eagles.

You had the sense after about the first 8 minutes of this contest that it may take an auspicious opportunity for one of these teams to snatch victory from the other.  Although Irondale did have the territorial and shot advantage in the game, it was a very well played, hard hitting and hard fought game.  To add to the affair, it was also T-G teacher appreciation night as the Eagles faculty attended wearing the players’ road jerseys in support.

T-G came out fast and struck first, just 1:56 into the match as Maddy Javorina intercepted a clearing pass in the Knights zone and found Abby Huber in the slot, who fired home her 4th goal of the year.  The Knights responded roughly 3 minutes later when their scoring leader, Sam Donovan notched her 22nd goal.  From this point on, the game turned into a struggle for both teams, as T-G played a bend but don’t break defensive style and Irondale would try and press the attack, but they would not be able to complete that last pass or finish when they had a scoring opportunity.

Although there would be no further scoring until the game winner in overtime, the action was fast paced and back and forth.  Logan Knip made a great kick save on Sam Donovan at the 8:02 mark of the second period, stopping a 2 on 1, and came up huge in the 3rd period making 2 straight point blank stops on a Knights powerplay, and again turning away 3 more successive shots early in the overtime on another Eagles penalty kill.  For the game, Logan had 35 saves.

T-G will now be looking ahead to their next contest on Tuesday night as they host St. Louis Park at Parade Ice Garden at 7:00pm.  The team will be honoring their 5 graduating seniors before the game:  Molly Adam, Kristen Dellich, Abby Huber, Taylor Peterson, and Kevin Johnson (manager).
