Pirates lose their fifth Greater Minnesota Conference game agains the Roseau Rams with a 5-2 score

Roseau-The Pirates split in their season meeting for the 2012-2013 hockey season with the Roseau Rams  as the Pirates won the first meeting four to two and the Rams beat the Pirates tonight with a score of five to two in Roseau tonight.

The Pirates were lead by Natasha Skala (Sr., Defense) and Maddie Nicholls (8th grade, Forward)  both girls had one goal apiece and no assists for the Pirates. Maddie Nicholls scored her first high school varsity goal this season for the Pirates in the five to two lost. Brianna Breiland (Sr., Forward) had both of the assists for the Pirates in tonight’s game.

The Rams were lead by five different players Katlyn Byfuglien (Sr., Defense), Bethany Tangen (Jr., Forward), Bailey Holter (Soph., Forward), Tianna Gunderson (Soph., Forward),  and Gracie Olson (Sr., Forward) all the girls had one goals apiece for the Rams and no assists except for Bailey Holter who had an assist along with her goal. The Rams were lead in assists by Ciscely Nelson (Sr., Forward) who had two assists on the night with no goals.

The Pirates came out sluggish against the Rams with only posting eight shots compared to Roseau’s twelve shots and one goal in the first period. Both teams were also in the penalty box tonight as the Pirates racked up eight penalty minutes while the Rams racked up twelve penalty minutes in the game and the Rams had only one powerplay goal on the eight penalties minutes the Pirates had. This game was not the best for the Pirates because they could not get anything going until the third period when the Pirates got two goals passed Roseau’s goaltender Bridget Slater. The Pirates did hold the Rams down on shots compared to the last meeting when the Rams had forty-four shots on goal and the Pirates kept them to twenty-nine shots in the game. The Pirates and Rams split the series this season with a four to two win in Red Lake Falls and the Rams took this game tonight with a five to two win in Roseau to bring the Pirates back to .500 with a 7-7-0 record and a record of 2-5-0 in the Greater Minnesota Conference so far this season.

The Pirates will return home to take on a Section 8A opponent the Park Rapids Area Panthers at the Crookston Sports Center with the puck dropping at 7:30pm.
