The fourth-seeded Wingers got off to a quick start and posted the second-highest scoring output of the year against Breck goalie Taylor Niesen, who is up for Ms. Goalie, but it wasn't enough as Breck's offense exploded for five goals in the second period en rout to an 8-4 victory.
Mustang senior Milica McMillen, who is on the U18 national team and a Ms. Hockey finalist, scored two goals in the final 40 seconds of the first period to erase a 2-1 deficit before teammate Kate Schipper grabbed the spotlight. The speedy Breck junior scored four goals in the second period to take the wind out of the Wingers' sails.
Red Wing freshman Reagan Haley scored the first two goals, while senior Cori Fairbanks and junior Paige Haley added one apiece.
Red Wing was whistled for seven penalties that led to four power play goals for the Mustangs. Breck outshot the Wingers 37-33 to advance to the state title game against South St. Paul.
The Wingers will play in the third-place game 9 a.m. Saturday morning against Warroad.
