The Wingers (16-7, 10-2 Missota) scored eight goals in the first two periods and quickly erased the memory of Tuesday’s loss to Chaska/Chanhassen that kept them from a conference championship.

“It was a renewing, cleansing game so to speak,” Red Wing head coach Scott Haley said. “We talked about it being a section game … The best part they had a lot of fun.”

Junior Paige Haley scored three goals and had two assists while sophomore Nicole Schammel notched four assists. Senior Cori Fairbanks netted two goals and senior goalie Lisa Nibbe made 29 saves in the win.

Brittany Sticha led the Trojans with two goals and an assist.

Scott Haley said he switched Reagan Haley, who also had an assist, from right wing to left wing and it paid dividends. He said he will keep her in that spot moving forward.

“It was kind of cool,” Scott Haley said. “It was weird how many scoring opportunities she had over there.”

Sticha put New Prague ahead first with a power-play goal 1 minute, 34 seconds into the game but Fairbanks responded with a goal at 5:58 and Red Wing took over from there. Reagan scored two goals about a minute apart and Fairbanks added another to send the Wingers into the first intermission up 4-1. Red Wing outshot the Trojans 19-7 in the opening period.

New Prague pulled within two goals at 5-3 after another tally by Sticha and a power-play goal by Lindsay Paschke but Paige, Reagan and Fairbanks each scored to put the Wingers up 8-3 after the second period.

Reagan added her fourth goal at 13:37 of the third period to give Red Wing the 9-4 victory.

The Wingers outshot the Trojans 44-33 for the game.

“I thought we moved the puck well tonight,” Scott Haley said. “I would have liked more discipline in the defensive zone but … obviously a good game.”

Section seeding for Red Wing takes place Sunday and the Wingers play either Simley or their section opponent Wednesday at Prairie Island Arena in Red Wing.
