The Red Wing girls hockey team opened the Robbinsdale Cooper-Armstrong tournament with a 3-3 shootout victory over eighth-ranked Rogers Tuesday in New Hope.

The Wingers, ranked 12th by Let’s Play Hockey, got goals from Reagan Haley and Nicole Schammel in the shootout to advance to the championship game against Cooper-Armstrong Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Red Wing (9-3-1) led the majority of the game but the Royals (8-3-2) tied the game with seven minutes to play on a power-play goal, Wingers head coach Scott Haley said.

The game will count as a tie, but Red Wing controlled much of the play. The Wingers tallied 43 shots compared to 19 for Rogers. The Royals just made the most of their opportunities, Scott Haley said.

“I think territorially we held the edge,” he said. “It seemed like their goals were really opportunistic more than anything else.”

Reagan Haley gave Red Wing a 1-0 lead in the first period while Emily Stegora and Cori Fairbanks gave the Wingers a 3-2 lead in the second period.

Lisa Nibbe stopped two penalty shots in the shootout to win the game and played well in overtime to force a shootout, Scott Haley said.
