The Stillwater Ponies earned champion honors with an overtime shoot-out win against the host team, the Eden Prairie Eagles. In what ended up to be a very exciting game, the Eagles scored first on a short-handed goal by Meghan Riggs late in the first period. Stillwater tied the scored 5:55 into the second period on a penalty shot goal by Amanda Cartony. That score was to hold up through the third period and the 8 minute overtime period with both goalies, Mara Sobczak for Stillwater and McKenzie Johnson for Eden Prairie making some big saves to preserve the deadlock. In the first shoot-out, each team scored two goals leading to the second shoot-out period. Stillwater's Lisa Tuuri and Ali O'Brien each scored in the second shoot-out period to clinch the Mid-Winter Meltdown title for the Ponies.
In the JV Division, Eden Prairie won in another close game beating Stillwater 3-1.Stillwater scored first early in the first period but that would be the end of their scoring for the game as Lexi Orcutt held the Ponies scoreless for the rest of the game. The Eagles took the lead on goals from Taylor Belton, Alex Mikle and an empty netter from Meishon Behboudi.
Eden Prairie High School and the Cutting Edge would like to thank all of the players, coaches, parents and fans of each of the teams for making this a fantastic inaugural tournament.
