Jane Ring Scholarship will keep her love for the sport living on

Bill Halbrehder

A true passion for the game of girls’ and women’s hockey!

That is the statement used to describe a local legend in Women’s Hockey.  Her name? Jane Ring!  Jane and her daughter Sue Ring-Jarvi, sponsor a scholarship for high school seniors, called The Jane Ring/Sue Ring-Jarvi Girl’s & Women’s Hockey Fund

This is tournament time and the end of the high school experience for our seniors, so it’s fitting to have the opportunity to talk about Jane Ring and the Scholarship.

Taking some historical information from a past brochure, what began as a Sunday morning game with her family, has become a passion for Minnesota’s “old lady of hockey” Jane Ring.

Long after she hangs up her skates, Jane Ring’s love of the sport will live on through the Girl’s and Women’s Hockey Fund Scholarship that she and her daughter started.

“I have a passion for hockey. A lot of people involved with the sport know me as the old lady of hockey now," she said.  “I hope these young girls are looking at me and thinking, wow, I still have at least 40 more years to skate.”

Jane and her daughter Sue, have done their share for girls’ and women’s programs in Minnesota, over the last 25 plus years. Jane hopes that other supporters of women’s hockey will contribute to the fund, which will allow more students to be helped.

You can join Jane in supporting girl’s and hockey in Minnesota. For information contact: Mike Guyer-Wood, or Susan Owen at Scholarship Management Services: A Division of Scholarship America

Here is the information that I have for the scholarship:

The Jane Ring/Sue Ring-Jarvi Girls/Women’s Hockey Fund was created to help female hockey players graduating from Minnesota High Schools. Two scholarships of $2,500 each are awarded annually to students who have demonstrated leadership ability, and athletic and academic achievement.
To be eligible, applicants must:
– Be a senior female graduating from a high school in Minnesota
– Have participated in varsity hockey (or its equivalent) while in high school
– Maintain a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) during her senior year in high school
– Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited college or university in the following academic year
– Submit the required application materials on or before the deadline date

Application information is available on the MN Girls Hockey Hub, and will remain there until the scholarship deadline for 2011. The scholarship application deadline for 2011 will be April 10 .

This scholarship is near and dear to Jane Ring and her daughter. I saw Jane at several section girls’ games last week, and I was there back in 2003 when she received the Joe Burke Award for support and dedication to women’s hockey, given by the College Hockey Coaches Association at their spring convention in Naples Fla.

Our own Charlie Stryker, and Jane’s daughter Sue Ring-Jarvi were recipients of the Joe Burke Award in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Listed below are past scholarship recipients, amoung them several names you’ll remember from season’s past:
1997: Angie Rieger of New Ulm
1998: Beth Wolff of Hibbing
1999: Andrea Carlson of Hibbing
2000: Tennie McCabe of Rochester
2001: Lindsay Wild of Inver Grove Heights
2002: Rebecca Kilpatrick of Burnsville
2003: Brittany Wiger of North St Paul
2004: Whitney Graff of Wayzata
2005: Mary King of St. Paul and Jessie Doig of New Prague
2006: Rachael Carlson of Anoka and Sara Toft of Alexandria
2007: Anna McNally of St. Paul and Rachel Browens-Rubin of Loretto
2008: Jamie Fenstermacher of Hibbing
2009: Jami Weiss of Duluth, Sadie Lundquist of Cloquet and Kaia Sele of Bemidji
2010: Rose Alleva of Red Wing and Julia Gilbert of Hermantown

Jane’s passion truly lives on with each scholarship given out. She loves the game and all it can do for our young girls and women.

Seniors, if you qualify, fill out your application. You will note that in some years more than one scholarship is given out. The Fund fluctuates as investments follow the market!

More contributions and an upswing in the economy will be of great benefit in the future. This year the hope is to award at least two scholarships.

Overtime Notes

Great crowds in Class 2A, Section 4 this year.

Aldrich was almost full for the final between Hill-Murray and Roseville, and nearly as many watched the semi-finals three days earlier at Aldrich.

Hannah Brandt was the player of the tournament, and her Hill-Murray teammates played inspired hockey for the No. 4 seed, as they won it all!

State Tournament Seeding was done on Saturday this year, instead of Sunday, as in the past!

Thanks to Westwood for their sponsorship of the Class 1A and Class 2A State Tournament banquets again this year! The Class 1A Banquet will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 22 at the Crown Plaza in St. Paul.  Class 2A will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Crown Plaza.
