Girls coast to 8-0 win in hockey opener

The Luverne girls’ hockey team turned in a commanding performance during its 2013-14 debut at the Blue Mound Ice Arena.

With Makayla Sterrett turning in a seven-point performance and Emilie Bartels registering a shutout in her first varsity start as the LHS goalie to lead the charge, the Cardinals coasted to an 8-0 victory.

Sterrett, who registered two assists in the contest, scored four goals in the first two periods of play and added another in the third period to cap a five-goal night.

Bartels stopped all seven shots she face in net to blank the Eagles in a game in which the Cardinals outshot Windom 45-7.

Sterrett opened the scoring 4:33 into the game with an unassisted goal during a power-play situation.

Sterrett made it 2-0 game with another unassisted tally with 3:57 remaining in the opening stanza before registering an assist for a goal by Madisyn Dingmann 2:03 later that capped a three-goal first period for the hosts.

LHS added three more goals in the second period to up its lead to 6-0.

Carly Serie scored the first goal 2:14 into the second stanza after being set up by Sterrett during a short-handed situation.

Sterrett completed her hat trick with 7:00 remaining in the period before scoring her fourth goal of the game with 1:11 left to play in the stanza.

Luverne added two more goals to its cause in the third period.

Sterrett capped her five-goal night with 13:55 left to play before Madison Crabtree scored the final goal of the game with 9:233 remaining.

Dingmann and Ellen Dahl matched Sterrett by recording two assists each.

Madi Oye and Hailey Sommers added one assist each to the winning effort.
